New Public Policy Is Drowning Out Lead In Water Systems Everywhere

September 14, 2023

A major shift in public policy is now underway that drastically expands ongoing efforts to keep lead out of drinking water.

For well over a decade, the US Safe Drinking Water Act and the National Plumbing Code of Canada have set strict standards to keep lead in drinking water below dangerous levels. However, these regulations were aimed mostly at preventing new installations of lead pipes, rather than replacing lead plumbing systems already installed.

The past few years have seen a flurry of activity aimed at eliminating lead pipes in drinking water delivery completely. Earlier this year, the US announced plans to replace100% of lead pipes in the country. Similar efforts are underway at the local level in various parts of Canada.

Prolonged exposure to lead can increase the risk of cancer, while also potentially causing issues with hearing, digestion and other health issues. Children are especially vulnerable as they absorb lead more easily than adults.

Winters is well prepared to address the needs of these changes, offering a broad range of lead-free pressure gauges, thermometers and accessories on the market. All of Winters' lead-free instruments are compliant with the US Safe Water Drinking Act and the National Plumbing Code of Canada. They are also compliant with the NSF 61 and 371, which are international health standards for safe water delivery and plumbing.
